Keep Leather Lasting Longer

Keep Leather Lasting Longer

Leather is widely regarded as a remarkably robust material. It is one of those rare fabrics that only gets better with age, when it is properly taken care of, of course.

Taking care of leather to afford it more longevity is not as difficult as you might expect. Sure it requires regular care and a little extra thought, but with the right attention, you could keep those leather boots, that stunning handbag or that old leather jacket for many, many years more. All you have to do is follow these tips, and your genuine leather products could become a lifelong feature.

Wipe it Down Regularly

Dust and other microscopic particles are in the air around us, and there is no avoiding them. When they settle on leather, whether that be shoes, bags or couches, these particles can accelerate wear and tear in the leather, shortening its lifespan if left unchecked.

Because of this, it is a good idea to wipe down leather items with a damp cloth, fairly regularly. If the item is used quite frequently, you’ll probably want to wipe it down daily for the best results.

Invest in a Leather Conditioner

Leather conditioning products are a great way to ensure that your leather retains its texture as time goes on. Leather tends to dry out and crack as time goes by. Conditioners use mink oil, leather honey and other substances that encourage leather to produce natural oils that give them moisture, colour and an additional layer of protection.

Get a Waterproofing Product

Leather doesn’t mix as well with water as most other products. In fact, left in a damp condition for an extended amount of time, it may even rot. It is, after all, made of skin. Leather is quite permeable, and as such, can’t be completely waterproofed; a situation that is made worse as it gets older. But by using a waterproofing product, you will give it the protection it needs to last longer.

Store in Ventilated Areas

Since leather is made of hide, it needs to breathe. Storing your genuine leather products in a poorly ventilated environment is not very good for it. Where leather is being stored, make sure that there is adequate air flow, especially if it will stay there for an extended amount of time.
